What Is Hope Beyond Borders?
Hope Beyond Borders is a community experience of belonging—a flexible gathering that uses music, human stories, meaningful questions, local partnerships, and shared action to bring people together.
It might take the form of a community concert, choir event, school or university gathering, faith-community program, civic event, story circle—or something a community creates for itself.
The goal is not simply to talk about belonging.
It is to help people experience and practice belonging together.
SING • LISTEN • CONNECT • ACT
SING — Make music—or something else—together.
LISTEN — Hear a human story that might otherwise go unheard.
CONNECT — Build relationships with people and organizations doing meaningful work locally.
ACT — Find something worth doing together.
The structure travels. The experience belongs to the community.
Is Hope Beyond Borders a Concert?
It can include a concert, but it is more than a performance.
Music can open the door. What matters is what happens when people walk through it.
A Hope Beyond Borders gathering might include music, storytelling, community conversation, audience reflection, a local Peace Hero, community organizations, shared singing, and opportunities for people to take a meaningful next step together.
Some experiences may be highly musical. Others might begin with a story, a school project, a nonprofit partnership, or a small group gathered around a good question.
There is no single required format.
What Is the Living Framework?
The Living Framework is the flexible structure communities can use to create their own Hope Beyond Borders experience.
It is a kit of parts, not a formula.
Its six building blocks are:
STORY — A story worth hearing
SONG — A song or shared experience worth creating
QUESTION — A question worth asking
PEACE HERO — A person or example of courage worth recognizing
COMMUNITY PARTNER — A relationship worth building
ACTION — A meaningful next step worth taking
Communities can use all six or begin with only a few. Change the order. Add local traditions, ideas, and resources. Let the people and place shape what happens.
The framework provides structure. The community provides the life.
Why Are Stories So Important?
Stories help us encounter the person behind the category.
Someone may enter our awareness as “a migrant,” “a veteran,” “a teenager,” “a refugee,” “a liberal,” “a conservative,” or any number of other labels.
A story makes the person larger than the label.
Hope Beyond Borders grows from a conviction that:
The shortest distance between two people is a story.
And many of the stories most worth hearing are precisely the ones most likely to disappear.
What Role Do Community Partners Play?
Community partners connect a Hope Beyond Borders experience with meaningful work already happening nearby.
A partner might be a food bank, youth organization, refugee group, congregation, school, veterans organization, neighborhood association, Habitat affiliate, arts organization, or other nonprofit or community effort.
Whenever possible, a partner does more than attend.
They help shape the experience.
Their relationships, knowledge, stories, and opportunities for action help make the gathering genuinely local.
What Does “Action” Mean?
Action may be large or very small.
Volunteer. Raise funds. Support a local organization. Tell another story. Share a meal. Create a community project. Invite somebody new into the circle. Sing together again.
Sometimes the next action is simply making another relationship possible.
People become community by doing something meaningful together.
What Is Singing Our Way Back to Each Other?
Singing Our Way Back to Each Other is the musical and community-singing expression of Hope Beyond Borders.
It invites choirs, congregations, schools, universities, musicians, and community members to use shared music as one way of practicing belonging.
Sometimes that happens through a Together We Community Choir.
Sometimes an existing choir participates.
Sometimes the audience simply sings together.
The larger idea is not that every Hope Beyond Borders experience must become a concert.
Singing is one powerful way of turning an audience into participants.
Must Every Hope Beyond Borders Gathering Include a Choir?
No.
A Together We Community Choir can be a wonderful part of the experience, but it is one expression of the Living Framework—not a requirement.
A gathering might use an existing choir, a few musicians, a song leader, recorded accompaniment, audience singing, or no formal choir at all.
The question is not:
“Did we reproduce the model correctly?”
The question is:
“What will help this community sing, listen, connect, and act together?”
Does Jerry Leggett Have to Participate?
No.
Jerry may participate as singer-songwriter, storyteller, interviewer, facilitator, artistic guide, or collaborator.
But Hope Beyond Borders is designed to grow beyond a traditional touring model.
Communities can create locally led experiences using the Living Framework, music, questions, stories, and other available resources.
You do not need to recreate Jerry's journey.
The invitation is to begin your own.
